Level = Advanced Reader through Adult.
Real Quick = Mosca is named after the patron saint of flies. With her inauspicious name, and her badly behaved goose, Saracen, Mosca runs away from home to save a kingdom on the verge of civil war. Her adventures are both harrowing AND hysterical.
Readers, you (and your parents) are in for treat when you pick up Fly By Night by Ms Frances Hardinge! If you liked the Harry Potter books, there is a very good chance you will love this very funny adventure story set in a land on the verge of civil war. There are some pretty wicked characters out to get the heroine, (a young girl named Mosca,) and her ornery goose (Saracen). Mosca is on her own, She has to take care of her goose, and herself, by playing both sides in a very dangerous political game. Sometimes its nearly impossible for Mosca (and the the readers) to tell who in the story is a friend, and who is only acting like a friend so they can do something rotten later on once Mosca and Saracen trust them. This book is written in a delightfully funny style (think Monty Python meets The Muppets) that makes the pages speed by. Morgan and I didn't want it to end! The good news is, there's a sequel! So don't be sad when you finish this story. Mosca and Saracen have more thrilling adventures in the second book.
